Biography

Born 1987 in Hai Duong, Vietnam. Based in London and Berlin.

Tieu immigrated to Germany at the age of 5 and was later naturalized as a German citizen. She studied at the University of Fine Arts (HFBK), Hamburg; Goldsmiths, University of London; and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Employing elements of fashion, advertising, and films, Tieu explores the psychological effects of various phenomena, such as global capitalism and sounds, based on her Vietnamese background and conducted research. Her recent exhibitions include "Though It's Dark, I Still Sing", the 34th São Paulo Biennial (2021, Sao Paulo, Brazil), "Zugzwang" (solo exhibition, 2020, Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany), and "Magical Soup" (group exhibition, 2020, Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin, Germany). Tieu participated in the artist-in-residence program at Arts Maebashi in 2018.

Footnote

During the term of this exhibition, the song More Than Day is played at 4:00pm every afternoon. People can listen to it at the Arts Maebashi Museum Cafe, other nearby shops, and on the museum's website. Sounding cheerful and pleasant, it goes well with the atmosphere of any shop. Perhaps visitors may not pay attention to its lyrics until they hear the sound several times.
This is a song that Tieu composed with three Vietnamese students living in Maebashi after listening to their emotions and putting them in words. Many students from Vietnam are engaged in rigorous labor for small payment. In the background of the situation lies the problems of Japan not being eager to accept different cultures and of globalized advanced countries tolerating economic gaps.
Tieu points out that such women are invisible although they are present just next to us. The song played at the same hour over and over again provides opportunities to listen to their voices.
